Aerial Yoga for Absolute Beginners: What Your First Class Is Really Like
By Nitu Patil

If you've been staring at aerial yoga videos on Instagram thinking "beautiful, but I could never" — this post is for you. After teaching hundreds of first-timers, I can tell you the biggest obstacle isn't strength, flexibility or age. It's the fear of walking in.
The hammock does more work than you think
The aerial hammock isn't a prop for advanced students — it's a support system. In your first class it acts like a very strong, very patient assistant:
- In standing poses, it takes weight off your legs and helps you balance
- In stretches, it lets you relax into positions your muscles would normally fight
- In inversions, it holds you completely — you're never relying on your own grip
Most beginners are surprised to find aerial versions of poses easier than the mat versions.
What actually happens in your first session
- Setup and safety. Your hammock is adjusted to your height and we go over how to get in and out. The fabric holds several hundred kilos — I'll let you test it.
- Warm-up on the mat. Gentle mobilisation so your shoulders, spine and hips are ready.
- Guided hammock work. Simple seated and supported poses first. Nothing surprising, nothing sudden.
- Your first inversion — only if you want. Most students go upside down in their first class, always spotted, always reversible. Some wait until class three. Both are fine.
- Cocoon relaxation. You wrap yourself in the fabric and float. This is the part everyone refuses to leave.
What to wear and bring
Fitted leggings, a t-shirt with sleeves (fabric against bare underarms can pinch), no zips or jewellery. Bring water. Everything else is provided.
The honest answer about difficulty
Will some things feel hard? Yes — grip strength and core engagement build over a few weeks. Will you leave your first class having done something you didn't think you could do? Almost certainly.
